There were five of us. Now there are four. My heart is heavy with the loss of my Cavalier brother and fellow bass drummer Steve Hartley, to complications from Covid. Steve and I were the new guys on the bass line in 1990. We had waited our entire lives for our shot, and we made the most of it that summer. What a glorious time that was, marching side by side. We kicked some tail, rammed some serious notes, and made a little drum corps history together.
Steve had a wonderful career as a paramedic in his home state of Kentucky. He had a warm, giving spirit, and would do anything for anyone, anytime. That’s just who he was.
Rest easy, Refund, my brother. I’m sorry that we weren’t able to see each other over the years, but we will meet again one day.
