“Sam was truly one of the kindest and most positively unique guys I ever met. The first drum corps show I ever marched was in 1965 in the Kankakee Challengers. Sam was an execution judge. It was dark out, we were in exhibition and Sammy was wearing sun glasses. I was standing on my first starting line, scared to death and our very young drum major asked Sam if he was blind.
