Dick originally was a member of the Austin Grenadiers, playing lead soprano. The Grenadiers were a tough group and our rivals. They ended up folding at the end of 1956. Dick came up to the hall and met with Don. Don spelled out his expectations, because of the Grenadiers reputation. Dick had no problem with what Don laid out. Dick ended up marching his age out year, 1957 our first National Championship. I ended teaching school with Dick. He would often say that was his best decision. He ended up being a life long educator with a masters degree. He was a long time friend. – Don Heitzman
